About me

My Philosophy
My Story

Lauren was born in Omaha, Nebraska and raised in a small rural town.  Having enjoyed singing all her life, she realized she wanted a career in music when her favorite days in high school were filled with rehearsals and band and choir classes.

Music Therapy appeared to be the ideal career, combining her passions for helping others and music. After finishing her college coursework at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, Lauren moved to New Orleans to complete her music therapy internship at Children’s Hospital.  Captivated by New Orleans’ culture, she has remained a New Orleanian since 2006.

Lauren worked as a Board Certified Music Therapist at East Jefferson General Hospital from 2007 until 2014.  She has also worked in the Jefferson Parish School System with The Music School Bus and offered music therapy services to Hospice Associates.  She currently teaches piano and guitar to children of all ages.

During Lauren's own pregnancy in 2014, she founded SongBirth NOLA to offer support during labor and delivery to NOLA moms using the tool that New Orleans is known for...music!

When not working, she is a busy mom and wife. You can find her walking at City Park and practicing yoga.

Birth is a normal, natural process.

A woman’s body is perfectly engineered for birthing and so is a baby’s.

Childbirth is hard work, a physical challenge, and involves sensations of pressure, fullness, and tightening.  Pain is usually brought about by fear and the resulting tension it creates in the body.

Relaxing and trusting in the process is the most beneficial thing you can practice in childbirth.

Discomfort is a natural, healthy part of labor.  It is a feedback mechanism that lets the mother know that her body is progressing.  It is not to be feared because it is not harmful.

A woman is able to manage discomfort in labor when she is empowered, calm, and in control.

Every birthing woman deserves to be supported and empowered while giving birth.

The birthing woman’s choices should be honored and respected at all times.

Women should give birth where they feel safe and secure.

Psychological preparation for childbirth enhances birth outcome.

Music, comfort measures, love, coaching, and support help a woman to stay connected to the process and her baby while in labor.

Everything posible should be done to enhance the parent-child bond during pregnancy, birth, and post-partum.

Birth outcome is enhanced by informed choice and education.

Compassionate use of medications during labor can enhance the safe delivery of a baby when complications arise during the birth process.

The most important part of the birth experience is a healthy outcome for the mother and child.
